auto tranny woes (longish)

So my friend has a 89 900s whose auto tranny was WAY out of adjustment (i.e. not shifting right etc) I caution her to get it serviced...
maybe the adjustment and service would have extended its life, maybe not we'll not.
but SHE (and yes this is me being sexist ) chose to hope it would go away.
thus two days ago at a stop light the car would go not more.
I am guessing that it is dead (I have little experience with the automatic, but having read the other posts, with 130k she has aleady done well to get that out of an auto box)
She has always had it dealer servicd (except for a starter I put in for her once)and I wince everytime I see her bill from there.
She is in Quincy MA is there anyone around to do the r+r.
There is a post about Quincy Motor works which is positive, anybody else got a good alternative?
(I am not going to do it.)
So would picking up a rebuilt box from someone like Eriksson industries and having somebody put it in local put it in be the best and cheapest?
I think I would insist on someone like that, just because it is too big a job to take chances on a name that i didnt know.
Any other good solutions?
I think she is attached to the car, just had some paint work done, and wants to keep it.
Is about 2-2,500k about a reasonable estimate?
Thanks for any and all info
-Andy
