I've been shopping around for a CD in-dash unit in the 200 buck range. I live in a fringe reception area with low mountains (s. vermont) and want the best tuner pos. for the money.
So far, I've narrowed my druthers down to a Nakamichi CD35z and a Blaupunkt Alaska or Honolulu (all around $200). Actually, I was all set to get the Nakamichi until I had second thoughts on its FM sensitivity; 15 dBf, w/PLL tuner (even the highest end Nakas have the same 15 dBf). The Alaska has 12 dBf with CODEM D digital tuner and the Honolulu; 10 dBf with CODEM III+. I even found a Blaupunkt RPD440 CD for $110 with 8 dBf (ORCIII). The highest priced Blaupunkts w/CODEM D only had sensitivities of 7.8 dBf.
I always thought the lower the dBf's, the better at pulling in fringe stations. Where I'm out in left field is sorting out PLL, ORC, CODEM, digital, blah blah blah. Seems something's weird when a $400 hi end Nakamichi has 15 dBf and a $110 Blau RPD440 has 8 dBf. (how's that for oversimplifying?).
Anyway, spent 4 hrs on the net trying to figure out what's what & the only result is, not ready to buy anything - too darn confused.
What say ye all.
