I recently had a coolant loss situation that was also a bit of a mystery. Sometimes there was a coolant puddle on the driveway, sometimes there wasn't. When I brought the car into the shop for what I thought would probably be a leaky hose or waterpump, my mechanic noticed that the coolant in the reservoir was up to the cap. I recalled that I had made a point of refilling it only to the line, which leaves a bit of head room.

This fact aroused their suspicions and so they did a leak-down test which revealed that cylinder no. 4 was leaking pressure into the cooling system. The increased pressure in the cooling system had caused the level in the reservior tank to rise. The puddle on the driveway was from coolant that had been forced out the overflow. In this case the leak in cylinder no. 4 was caused by a faulty head gasket, but it can also occur as the result of a cracked head.

Since the car has close to 75,000 miles and the head had to removed to replace the gasket I figured that I would take the opportunity to replace the head with a reconditioned one and got one from SPG9. They had one that had already been ported, flowed and had new valve guides installed.

Once my shop removed the head they found oil in the intercooler and intake system, which indicated that the turbo had been leaking oil. SPG9 also provided a replacement turbocharger assembly - one that has a higher flow turbo (from a Nissan 300ZX) and a waste gate from a Volvo. All this wasn't cheap, but the improved performance is well worth the money. Overall the car is more responsive, but once above 3000 RPM the car really takes off.

Dave at SPG9 was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with prompt service and can be reached by email at dave@spg9.com.

Good luck with your mystery - let us know how you solve it.
