Saab says synthetic is ok but youve gotta change the oil at the same times as if it were normal. My bud had an 86 with 400K miles entirely on regular oil before the car was wrecked. Seems that as long as the oil is changed at appropriate times, there is no real need for the synthetic. I use regular oil, 10w40 in summer, 10w30 in winter, changed every 4,000-6,000 miles or 3-5 months, depending on season and type of driving. Ive never had any internal engine problems with any car i have owned (3 saabs, 2 volvos, 1 peugeot diesel, all at least 200K before retirement). possibly if you drive a turbo the synthetics are worth their while, due to higher oil temps.
