I don't know if you remember this, John, but around Halloween you posted a procedure for replacing the power steering fluid in a Saab. Often an informative instructional post like that will catch my attention and I print it out for use later. I had your post in my files.
Well, today was the day. Yesterday my Beastie emitted some ugly sounds when I turned the wheel. I've been meaning to clean the sludge out of the P/S reservoir for a long time (since reading your post!), but the noise convinced me to get off my butt and do it. Believe it or not, the stuff in there was the original fluid that came in the car when it was new, nearly 14 years ago.
Changing the fluid was kind of a messy job, but no real surprises, thanks to you! I pumped a few quarts of new fluid through the system, pouring fluid in while my wife started and ran the engine. I reconnected the hose to the reservoir, then she ran the car and turned the wheel back and forth a few times, lock to lock while I watched. The fluid then looked a little murky, so we flushed it out again until it was clear. In the end I used over 1 gallon of power steering fluid to complete the job... for a total cost of just over 12 bucks. Not too shabby -- that's getting off cheaply!
After the fluid change, the noise has disappeared completely and the Beastie is its old self again. Thanks a million for helping me out today -- you probably didn't realize it, but you were with me out there in the Garage Mahal!
Sincerely,

(and '87 900T with clean fluid!)
