When I was younger and a lot more cold-tolerant than I am now, I had plenty of experience in icy climates. (In fact, I learned how to drive in Keflavik, Iceland!)
I remember a few nasty Indiana winters when I had to repeatedly heat my car key with a butane lighter to open the door of an old musclecar I had. Friends wondered why I had a lighter; I never smoked. But I kept one handy to drive my car. The ice would sometimes melt and re-freeze, but the technique worked the first few times I tried it. One time, though, the key froze solidly in the lock. I couldn't turn it to get it out. I ended up running a long extension cord to the house and using a soldering iron to heat the key, and then pulled the hot key from the lock with pliers. It took forever, standing and shivering in the cold. After I got it out and went back inside to get warm (and as long as I had the extension cord out there) went back I used my wife's blow dryer to melt away all the moisture from around the lock. The car had a half-inch thick glaze of clear ice on it! I remember the wipers being frozen solidly to the glass. I left the car running for 20 minutes with the defroster blasting so I could clear the windshield and drive it. These fond memories are among the reasons I now live in Florida and keep my vehicles in a garage!
Oh, yeah... and Ed, that's the reason I don't have a dog, either. HA!
