This was one of the first things I did to my 87 after I bought it. There is not much room to reach fasteners and it's a dirty job, but I found it satisfying once it was done. I found the clamp for the steering column was most easily accessed through the opening for the driver's side axle in the body. I also found that on my car (a SPG with a lowered suspension) I had to disconnect but not remove the sway bar in order to get the disconnected steering rack out of the car. Also, if you follow the Bentley manual instructions, don't worry about measuring the distance between the grove on the inner tie rod end and the end of the outer tie rod end with the objective of maintaining the original front end alignment after the new rack is in the car. This won't work because the new rack will not have the groves in the same place as the old rack had them. Take your test drive to an alignment shop.
