I assume your car had central locking - where you lock the driver's door and everything locks, unlock the driver's door and everything unlocks.
Two possiblities here. When the trunk is LOCKED and you squeeze the handle, notice how the handle is very easy to squeeze? No resistance? When you UNLOCK the trunk, is the handle the same easy squeeze, or does it give you resistance?
The squeeze handle pulls up on a rod, and that rod goes to the latch release mechanism at the bottom of the hatch. When LOCKED, a lever moves and disconnects the squeeze handle from the rod, so the handle floats free and is easy to move. When UNLOCKED, a lever connects the squeeze handle to the rod.
If the handle is easy to squeeze if locked, then chances are the rod connecting the squeeze handle to the latch fell off. It's a ball and socket joint and fails. Remove the cover on the inside of the hatch (if the hatch doesn't open, fold down the seats and climb in) and reattach the rod.
If the handle is hard to squeeze when unlocked, then the release latch at the bottom is out of adjustment. You squeeze, but it's binding and hold the latch closed. As the others have said, press down HARD on the hatch to releve some of the pressure and unlatch. Then with the hatch open, readjust the latch down a hair so it won't bind.
Good luck.
