I just did the waterpump all by my lonesome using Monster's excellent description. It too about two hours. Did the thermostat as well as flushed the system. Not that bad a job, but not good either. I have a job which frequently requires me to travel on short trip on short notice. I counted myself lucky to have found the time to do the pump.
Days later, the pump on my 92 starts leaking and grinding. Looking at my calendar I do not see large enough bloc of time within the next two weeks to perform the job. I call the dealer for a price quote: $380 - $420!! At this stage of my life I have more meoney than time, but $400 for a waterpump! I then said that I have an after market Laso pump (GAPA, 39.95). I was told that they will not warranty the labor on the job. BS!
Why such a high price? Well seems they also adjust the timeing chain and do other work while they are at it. I said the chain is well tensioned and needs no adjustment, and that a new t-stat is not necessary as I replaced it a few months ago. However, the technician requires that he do the other work, aparantly so he can run up the price. Looks like I will do the work in early Febuary. Hope the pump holds out 'till then.
Moral: NEVER ever trust the dealer. EVER.
