my mechanic's view on transmission leak

Okay, I took my 88T(auto) to the mechanic to figure out what to do about a leak I've been having under the front part of the transmission. Apparently three of the four hoses that go into the thermostatic valve are losing fluid at the base. Since this is a pressurized area, he suggested two options, replacing the tubes/valve which are extremely expensive from saab. This procedure would be difficult and labor time would be high without removing the engine. The other alternative would take about an hour and a half and would involve bypassing the thermostatic valve area ie the transmission cooling unit (?) and reconnect the hoses. This would eliminate the leaks but I would not have the intricate cooling system working for me. He said that earlier saabs didn't even have this cooling system component and that it would only be a problem on very long trips in the summer. I'm not going to drive very far in this car so I thought it wold be okay. Does this procedure make any sense??? This mechanic is known to be one of the areas best so I trust his judgement. I may need a new transmission soon but I thought this would eliminate some leakage and pressure loss for the time being. Any thoughts? He is also putting in ATP friction modifyer in the tranny (recommended by saab) to help reduce friction wear. Total estimate, about 95 to 130 dollars labor plus 20dollars in parts. Comments on this procedure would be great
