If you turned the piston in as far as you dare, does that mean that it's not all the way? Turn it until it won't go any further. You will not damage it by running it all the way to the stop. Use a large C-clamp or other equivalent tool to push the piston back into it's cylinder. If it won't go far enough, perhaps the mechanism is corroded/jammed internally. If so, a rebuild, or at least disassemble/reassemble is called for. Given that this is an '82, corrosion and pitting in the piston/cylinder are very likely so a new/rebuilt caliper may be required.
