It sounds like the shift shaft seal to me. Is it up above the differential cover and to the right slightly? I would replace the water pump before it becomes catastrophic. The water pump is about an hour or so to replace. The last thing you want is to have it fail when you least need it to... Replace the coolant with the MB type at the same time. (and possibly the fan switch and thermostat if they are in need of it). The shift shaft seal is a bear. I have a leaky one on an '89 that I am curator for. I tried to get it off and gave up. I let it leak and keep an eye on teh transmission lube.
