I was thinking something similar myself just the other night, the problem is that it's difficult and time consuming to actually compile many thoughtful posts into one coherent FAQ... Honestly, I think the best FAQs are concise, bullet-point-type articles and these rarely come from casual posts. Even the most well-thought-out responses are rarely ready to be sealed up and saved.
With that in mind, I was thinking it might be useful to do two things:
For Q&A type FAQs, it might be useful to setup another BBS with a single thread which is changed once a month. Start it out with a topic, then follow that topic through for a period of one month. When it's done, someone might wish to compile and present the posts, or it could be archived as-is for others who wish to read all they can. Later down the road, if someone has the inclination or time to actually do some writing, this would allow them a single point to pull info from.
For Recommendation type FAQs (like tires or fluids) a similar design - leave the topic active for a month, and organize it by product. Start a thread about Dunlop D60A2s and allow people to post *on topic* regarding their experiences with that specific tire. After one month, seal it up and post it for everyone to see. Topics could be revisited on a regular basis to keep product reviews current.
Of course, both of these just create more work for Scott with all the moderating and archiving duties but IMHO it seems the only way to get it done so that the result is useful. Also, IMHO, it might be worthwhile to switch over to a different BBS software, even if just for these two forums... Something like UBBS or DCFORUM, which allow recent/active threads to float to the top, might keep things moving and make the whole easier to search & read...
