Without having the advantage of actually seeing it or knowing how many miles thre are on the current water pump, I'd think that the seals on the pump are getting weepy (like some of the movies on TNT today).
I had a similar problem on my '89 (drips of coolant on the driveway, heavy glycol smell, etc.) and it turned out to be the pump - there was so much play in the bearings that the seal faces didn't make good contact and coolant dripped out the weep hole. This water pump was much further gone than yours is.
I couldn't rule out the headgasket, but do the simple things first. You can get water pumps relatively inexpensively from the sponsors on the bottom of the page. Use Locktite 518 on the gasket instead of silicone. And get the OEM water pump instead of one of the cheapies because it is made with cast impeller and has a large shaft diameter. It will last longer.
