The symptoms you describe sound like the problem I had on my 87. The trucking company I hired to move it didn't know to turn the key on to start it when it was parked in reverse. The driver blindly pulled up on the shift knob (trying to get it into neutral with the key off) until he broke it. When I got the car, it wouldn't go onto reverse. What I found was that there is a small diameter rod that goes down the middle of the gear shift lever. When you lift up on the knob, this rod lifts a lock out mechanism located at the bottom of the shift lever. Raising this lock out allows you to select reverse. This rod had been pulled out of the shift knob on my car. If it comes loose at either end, the car will show what you describe (won't go into reverse). My solution was to pull the shift lever and check the lockout mechanism and its adjustment. As the other message says, there is also an adjustment. This adjustment is the height of this locking and thid height is set by threads on this thin rod in the middle of the shift lever. Once the shift lever is out, you can both check the operation of the lockout mechanism (it should move when the shift knob is “lifted” and the adjustment of it. I’ll bet you find it’s one or the other of these. Let us know.
