The lower pivot bolt )with the ba%^*rd-to-counterhold nut) is never loosened for any adjustments, only for removal of the alternator* (*exception below). The alternator pivots snugly even when the bolt is fully tightened thanks to the metal sleeves in the bushings where the bolt passes through. ALL tension adjustments require that the locknut (17 mm)at the end of the threaded portion of the tensioner which attached the tensioner to the alternator be loosened. Otherwise the alt will not move as the adjuster position is changed. I remove the nut and then further tension the belts further than they are by pulling/pushing the alternator AWAY from the block. This releases the lateral force on the mounting bolt and it will pop right out of the remainder of the bracket completely releasing the tension from the alt belts. Reinstallation is often simply the reverse. Belts only need be snug enough to not slip. If it wasn't apparent why the mounting bolt wouldn't budge, it's likely that your belts were way too tight. Excess tension gives shortened lives to both waterpumps and alternator bearings.
As for the ba%^*rd bolt at the base of the AC bracket: I always drain the coolant and move the heater hoses first off. Next release the alt and pop belts off. Pivot the alt all the way out and get in there with a 12 mm combo-my double headed box is too long although the torque from it would be nice. That bolt is often too long to come out and clear the alt on cars with hydraulic mounts that don't have the bracket slotted. The bolt was fine until they added hydraulic mounts which GREATLY restricts the movement of the alt. It took a couple of years (probably of taking it on the chin during warranty work) before the bracket was modified. To get it out the first time is where you need to remove the pivot bolt* far enough to wiggle the alt so the bolt through the AC bracket comes clear.
From there, it's just a waterpump replacement.
NEVER put an unslotted AC bracket back on if you own the car or are planning to work on the car again , even if it means a delay while seeking out a 4 in grinder. You will be all smiles the next time when it saves you great suffering.
