I'd like to do this as well to my recently rebuilt '88. I've gotten some recommendations from others (thanks Mike S!), and applied some ideas from my musclecar days... Some of the ideas that were tossed around include:
Better air filter setup- K&N element, improve or remove air inlet ducting, add another inlet duct to canister, add ram-air ducting.
Use a larger air flow plate from a Saab 99, install a hipo cam, or even the turbo cam. Port the heads, three angle valve job.
Less restrictive exhaust, like one from a turbo car, using a 2.1 liter headpipe and exhaust manifold. (Will this exhaust manifold fit the 8 valve head??, anybody??)
Increase the compression ratio??
Lightening of the flywheel.
Change the timing advance curve (can this be done?)
Add a low pressure turbo system.
Again, just some ideas, as I haven't tried anything yet. I'd also like to hear some input from others...
