I just replaced a starter on my 87 900T maybe last year. Before I went to the bother I wired in a 5ma LED in parallel with the starter solenoid signal wire to see if my nostarts were synching with a signal loss. I noticed that the LED lit every time I hit the key; the starter motor would or would not work as it felt like it. Moreover, when it DID work, I noticed that the LED would fade out slowly when I let loose of the ignition key on the start sequence.
FWIW, after I replaced the starter with a factory rebuilt the engine spins over smartly (it was a slow cranker before for five years) and the LED goes right out when I let go of the key. Perhaps it was only a solenoid and maybe worn brush problem, but it's fixed now!
Replacing the starter wasn't too difficult...worst issue was moving the plastic ring gear cover out of the way to get to the bolts that hold the starter on. I wouldn't advise doing this in really cold weather because the plastic will no doubt be very stiff and probably crack or break.
