That's the normal size for the electrode on the EV series plugs. It's a gold-palladium alloy that has a very high melting point so they can use a thin electrode that won't erode quickly. One big advantage of the thin electrode is that it provides a fine point which builds up a high electrical charge that jumps easily through a high-pressure fuel/air mixture.
The BCP 5EV is ok and should last you much longer than the ES plugs you took out. The plug that's recommended in the Owner's manual is what you took out - BCP 5ES, and the heat range is the same as the EV. The resistor plugs aren't necessary, but I don't think that they'll be harmful in any way.
