A/C leaking condensate into cabin (still!)

I posted this problem a while back. but understand the problem better now.
Water is dripping out the bottom of the condensor(? whatever it is that's bolted to the firewall) between the unit and the firewall, rather than down the drain. Not a huge problem except for the fact that the water trickles down the firewall and into the cabin along the brake pedal *right-hand drive)...leaving a puddle.
Is it safe/easy/wise to take the condensor off the firewall to see what is going on back there? I ask because I'm hesistant to start playing with a high-pressure system.
I also read somewhere about a recall on the unit, requiring an extra drain to be fitted or something like that. Ring any bells? I'll go looking for it...
TIA
BTW its an '85 Aero.
