The rubber dry rots and cracks. Then the fluid leaks out. You didn't notice it because the rear of engine doesn't raise up and down like the front when you accel/decel. The biggest indicator of bad right mount is it sinks and the engine will sit flat on the mount. Normally, you can get your small finger between the rubber part of mount and the bracket from the engine. I know because my mounts are shot. If you're changing the right.. I'd change the driver side too while engine is out.
