3/4 is normal for winter, with good rad and 92C fan switch (verify by stamped numbers). Also verify saab 82C t-stat was installed. Both fans should come on at 3/4 in winter, with ign on or car running.
From a soon to be FAQ:
----------------------
Saab OG-900's don't run hot by nature, only by problems. They are one of the few cars with a true, linear temperature gage, that will cycle up and down after warm-up, where most have a gage that sits in a single 'normal' position thru a wide range of operating temperatures. So the normal rise in temperature on the gage until the fans kick in, can be mistaken for a problem.
The Bentley repair manuals are great. They include description and location of cooling system components, and simple troubleshooting.
NORMAL, HEALTHY OPERATION
Cruising ..... Runs at 40% on gage (50% with 190F T-stat, vs prefered 180F, 82C ), warmed up and cruising for 3-5 minutes at 40-60 mph, with AC off. True even in 90F weather. Fans should not be needed cruising.
Stopped ..... In hot traffic, stop and go, or at long idle, gage slowly climbs to 2/3 to 3/4, when fans come on, bringing gage back to about 1/2 before shutting off. This is a NORMAL cycle of the system, not a hot problem. This assumes the proper stock 92C fan thermo-switch is used. In very cold weather, fan trip point will be a little higher on gage than in warm weather (due to more free convection cooling of the radiator, and location of fan switch)
ACTUAL GAGE TEMPERATURES
I tested my gage using and infared sensor off the t-stat housing:
gap between gr and red = 235F
99% 230F (top of green)
88% 220F
75% 210F (fans turn on)
67% 200F (fans turn on)
50% 190F (fans shut off)
40% 180F (T-stat opens)
