Either I must have been really whacked when I wrote down the location of where the wires plugged into the cap, or something was strange about the previous cap. I figured that the changing of the cap must have caused some kind of a timing problem - but when I attempted to time the car, I couldn't see any markings on the flywheel. SO, I figured I better find out which of the distributor points the car thought was #1 and I tweaked the starter a few times until I found the timing markings. Lo and behold - it expected the wires to be plugged into the cap as:
(trying html to format this)
hole closest to the top-
3
4 1
2
...although I wrote down that they came out of the cap as:
4
2 3
1
I plugged them into the cap the way the engine was expecting them, and voila! it fired right up. AND the new cap, rotor, and plugs make the car just purrrrr. :o)
