Ever watch the guy do one of these, perhaps by hidden camera?
If the car is running good they'll just replace the parts that are called for, change the oil/filter (what, plugs every 30K, maybe cap and rotor, very rarely wires, I've never seen them retorque all the suspension bits even though it's called for, and you can bet they don't change the hydraulic fluid in the convertible top mechanism much less adjust it!). Chances are the book was just stamped and the dealer/shop takes the risk that nothing happens in the 90 days/4000 miles after the service.
IMHO, a car that has simply had the minimum maintenance done according to the manufacturer's requirements is just that...minimal. For example, the timing chain issue on the 16v engines is just starting to surface...there are no mfr-recommended timing chain replacement or adjustment intervals and yet timing chains and sprockets and tensioner on this engine (as compared to the bulletproof 8v engine) wear and should probably be replaced at 200K miles. But will Saab come out and say it....Naaah. '
