Thanks for the compliment, Mark... but I'm no Saab tech, and certainly no Norse guru. The stuff I write on here is just what I've experienced first-hand during my own amateur attempts at fixing stuff on my trusty Swedish Beastie. Please take my words only at that value -- I'm just a back-yard mechanic learning as I go and trying to share what I've learned.
I post to this board in the hopes that the mistakes I've made and the lessons I've learned will prevent similar frustration in others, but there are no guarantees! You may avoid making some of the dumb mistakes I've made, and discover a whole new set of your own along the way. I'm not really experienced enough to point out all the possible pitfalls of every procedure I write about; I can only tell you what =I= did and how it worked for me. Often, after I've posted, others will point out different ways I could have done things, so if you're ever reading one of my long posts, make sure you also read all the attached commentary and discussions in the thread with it.
I should probably preface my "how-to" posts with disclaimers when I put them on here. I honestly fear that someone is going to goon up their car one day and then say, "...but Monster said to...!" I would feel awful if anyone got hurt or caused damage because something I wrote was taken as Saab Scripture from a bona-fide guru. Most of what I've learned about working on the Beastie was from discussions and solutions given to me by others on this SaabNet. My only real gift is a knack for telling the stories after I've tried something out myself.
The manuals and guides like those on the Townsend site have at least three things going for them that I can't provide. One is info specific to your particular year/model/engine -- all I know is my '87 900T. Another is pictures -- sometimes the reason the manuals have only a few words where I have to write several paragraphs is because you can look at a picture of what they're talking about, and it's good in any language! A third thing they have going for them is that the manuals and guides are giving you tried and tested procedures based on extensive experience, whereas I just write about what worked for me the first time I tried something. Sure, I try to follow the directions and don't just make blind attempts, but how can I possibly know what would happen if I tried the same thing on YOUR car? I don't.
So anyway, Mark, I just wanted to say that I'm flattered that you read what I post on TSN, but to you and anyone else out there who considers putting a great deal of weight on my advice, please be careful. Don't throw away your shop manuals... and if something doesn't seem right, question it, ESPECIALLY if it's in one of my posts! Believe me, my feelings won't be hurt if we debate alternatives and someone has better ideas.
Warm regards and Happy Saabing,
