OK, loaned the car to a trusted friend and he blew the clutch. I know he wouldn't beat the balls off of my car so it must have just been it's time to go. Now, with the help of my trusty Haynes manual I have the clutch cover off but the slave cylinder will not disengage the clutch far enough to allow me to insert the piece of plugwire to hold it open so I can remove it. I'm thinking that the clutch master is bad and is not sending enough fluid to the slave to actuate the clutch. The clutch pedal has a bit of travel before it encounters any resistance and I have bled the system to no avail. As soon as the clutch pedal requires effort to depress the slave moves so I think it is ok. Also, it was always hard to switch gears in the car. I had assumed the pilot bearing was binding, but now I'm thinking that the clutch just never disengaged all the way. Perhaps this contributed to the clutch going south. The clutch shaft came out no problem and I think I may have a tool for the tool collective. Found a piece of steel that functioned perfectly as a clutch shaft removal tool.
