Saw a 1989 900T 4door, 5sdp, Charcoal/grey leather for sale at $3100 and thought I'd check it out. Having a 1980T 5door and a '99 9-3, I've been condidering selling the 1980 8v "B" motor for a 16v '87-'90 900T - though I have never been in or driven one. The Seller told me he bought it at an auction and had no idea of it's history.

The body had no rust, but here in So. California few do, and the paint was shiny with no visible ripples. That was the good news. As I looked closer I noticed the front fender, hood and bumper were not fitted right. Inside the hood I noticed the fender wall had bondo fillings. The radiator also had several welding marks and the passenger side fan was missing.

The engine started fine and ran smooth, but a thumping noise came from the driver's side just above the wheel well. My guess is it was the .

The dash was cracked, but the leather interior was good and all the power options worked - including sunroof.

As I drove it I noticed it was slower off the line than my 1980 900T (Old Blue) until about 35mph when the turbo spooled up and kicked in for some decent accelleration, though nothing major. Clutch and trans were fine, but I was amazed at how many creaks and rattles the car had. These noises weren't just annoying, they were unsettling.

My guess is that it was in a frnt end accident, fixed and then sold to a donation/auction house as a tax write off. This seler picked up on looks not examining it carefuly.

This made me appreciate my 1980 900T immensely. In fact, I'm now motivated to fix the pulley and ps pump that I'v been putting off. Aside from those two things, Old Blue seems much newer than the mistreated '89.

I don't mean to downplay newer c900's, but I didn't seem much, if any, improvement over 1980. Of course, this was not a good representation of an '89.

Regards,

SS
