They're supposed to be put in there with green loctite at the same time as the snap ring...excessive clearance between the bearing race and the snap ring and the breakdown (or non-use of loctite) can allow the OD of the bearing race and the ID of the bearing holder to not hold the bearing during turns especially.
If the knocks are when going straight over bumps, though, it's almost certainly shocks/upper doughnuts although it could be any bushing in the front end from the A-arm to the swaybar bushings, even balljoints.
And, no, there is no practical way to check the balljoints other than by unloading them with a spacer to the frame/upper suspension arm. (You could remove the balljoint and examine it, but that STILL requires unloading the upper suspension arm with a spacer!).
