Hi Erik, I too have an '85 900. Mine is a turbo 16v 3dr and I love it. It is my first SAAB, but probably not the last. I always wondered why the middle vent always blows cold air. It had me stumped but I found out from the posts on this board that it is supposed to do that, perhaps to keep the driver awake or something. Anyway, it is just another endearing little eccentricity of our cars. If your temp knob spins without resistance then the rod that attaches to it has come off or broken. You can access this rod by removing the driver side dash speaker and reaching in that way, but you will probably want to remove the dash to see what's up. If you have to do that there are four long phillips head screws that hold the dash in. They come up from the bottom and are different sizes so don't mix them up. The last one is covered up by the center console so that has to come out too. One other thought, if your radio is in the dash you can remove it and it's metal DIN box thing that it fits in and gain access to the back of the temp switch. Good Luck!
