Get a long screwdriver and hold the handle to your ear while you touch the tip along the length of the valve cover when the cold engine is started. If the noise is loudest near the chain, stop the engine and remove the valve cover and check the 4 inch long pad/guide that sits in the valve cover above the chain. I'll bet it's hard. Replace with a nice new soft one. If your chain is still OK, the noise should stop.
If the screwdriver stethoscope detects most of the noise from the all the lifters, then you could have an oil pump problem or a restricted oil passage(s). You can try a can of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase to disolve the crud or get a can of the oil flush and then change your oil.
If the screwdriver stethoscope detects the noise from only some of the lifters, you have a lazy lifter. You can replace the bad lifter(s) or try the Marvel Mystery Oil/flush to free up the stuck lifter(s)
