bad head gasket and bearing damage question

Hello, I am too familiar with Saab head gasket problems ,now my minivan with a 2.5 dohc 4cyl. has developed a problem . Started with an oil leak and now I'm getting a little white deposit on the filler cap. The mechanic I have said that coolant in the oil will damage the bearings. Of all the head gasket talk on this board I don't remember hearing any warnings about urgencey of repair. I imagine it depends on the extent of the leak and to what degree the oil is being dilluted. Thanks,Bruce (84t & 86S)
