Yes, you can send all the battery current through the meter - that is the brute force method, and if there is a short, then look out!
In high current applications, the full current *never* flows through the meter. Instead, a small shunt is installed in series between the battery and the load, and the current meter goes across the shunt. Essentially, 99% of the current flows through the shunt, and 1% goes through the meter. The meter is then calibrated to work with that shunt. The wires from the shunt to the meter are nice and thin, and there is usually a fuse in each leg in case of a short.
You should be able to find a current meter with shunt at most autoparts stores. But I agree with the others - monitor voltage and that should be enough.
