Bring adequate tools to pull the plug. If it comes out easily and is very clean, then they just cleaned it, but most wreckers aren't out to actually try to rip you off. Small metal shards and a thick grey sludge attracted to the plug is fairly normal. Large chunks of teeth or other broken bits are not normal. You might even pull the covers as well. The worst you will be out is the cost of a gasket set. Make sure the dipstick hole is about 1 in in diam. There are still early gearboxes out there that are a pain to use with a 16V motor that have a 1/2 in dipstick tube from the days when oil went in through the valve cover. Run your fingers in the CV joints. The driven (forward) faces should be smooth; you will know a bad one when you feel it. If all checks out, you are getting a good deal. If not, you will sound like you know what you are talking about when you negotiate them down to it's value as a potenttially rebuildable core. Feel free to e-mail me after your exam if you have questions. Don't rush into it if you have any doubts about it's condition. It's cheap but if the ring and pinion are shot, it's worthless to you.
