I had a problem about two months ago in my '85 900T 16V when while driving (I have a manual transmission by the way) the idle would go up REALLY high (around 2500 to 3000 RPM) when I'd push in the clutch or put the car in neutral. When I turned off the car, it wouldn't start again. After some time went by, I tried to start it again and it did start. It did have the high idle problem still, though. I took it in to my independant Saab mechanic the next day and of course, it wasn't having the problem anymore and they searched around for what it could be. They found a disconnected vacuum line and told me that's what it could've been. I didn't argue with them, but if that were the problem, why did the problem go away on its own? I didn't have the problem again until a couple of days ago. Same symptom. High idle while clutch is pushed in or car is in neutral. When I stopped for gas at a gas station I couldn't start the car again. I had to call AAA to tow me home after trying for an hour to start it.
I took the car in to my mechanic again (after letting the car sit for several hours I was able to start it). This time the problem was still occurring. After he turned it off, it wouldn't start again. He pulled the fuse for the fuel pumps and the car started. So it seems as if the car was flooded. After keeping the car for over two days (I think it just sat there most of the time waiting for them to look at it while I paid around $100 a day for a friggin' rental car to use for work...) he tells me that they found a short in the wiring for the temperature sensor (this would explain why the car had been having problems "cold start"ing for the past few months) and that they had to pull out the entire wiring loom and fuse box so that they could run a new wire from the fuse box back to the sensor, solder it and shrink tube the whole thing. 5 hours of labor @ $350 and $209 for a rental car later, I drive out of the garage a satisfied customer. Then when I got off the freeway near my house, IT WAS HAPPENING AGAIN!!! I need to take it back so he can really FIX the problem. Does anyone here have ANY guess as to what could cause this? I suspected the AMM at first and suggested it to him while he was troubleshooting the problem but he told me that they had tested it and other sensors and they passed the tests. He told me that they also tested the temperature sensor and that it had checked out okay. That's when they found the short in the wiring. However, in hindsight it seems as if the short wasn't really a problem (not one worth $350 at least...). Thanks in advance!!!
