A number of years ago we bought a used vehicle with a very interesting title history. The original owner bought the vehicle in Michigan and brought it back to his home in Illinois. Because it was an out of state vehicle sale the dealer did not collect the tax or registration because the guy was responsible for submitting those to the state of Illinois when he registered it. Well he never did register it. Instead he just kept renewing the registration on his previous vehicle so that he would get the new tags each year. After about three years he brought the vehicle back to the selling dealer and traded it on another presumably with the understanding he would send the title to them when he got home. Since there was no title the dealer was stuck with it for many months until it all got sorted out. When it finally did get sorted out the guy was in all sort of crap with the state of Illinois (nonregistration, improper use of tags, tax evasion) and the dealer was probably looking for damages too. Undoubedly he thought he was a master mind until it all crashed down around him. How dumb can they get?
