You can avoid most of the really expensive specialized tools by keeping track carefully of the shims. I use them because I have access to them and I don't have complete confidence in the last guy that had it apart. Many that I have apart have been apart before. A 0-1" micrometer and a vernier accurate to at least 0.1mm are useful. A good pair of Magnifocusers and excellent lighting really help in spotting subtle damage. The way your reverse gear will look under it is scary. I buy parts from Erikssons frequently as I feel that you should point your money where you point your questions. Nat freely shares his expertise and if I'm not buying a trans, I try to return the favor by buying the wear items for the rebuild from him. If you need a used hard part, they are a great source too. But don't expect him to have a cherry used reverse gear for $50 for you. I have also been treated well by some of the other sponsors here for trans stuff, most recently by Sobstory.
