intermittent idle stall

I've been having this problem off and on for quite a while with
my 88 900S (108k). Every now and again, perhaps twice a month, the car will simply die at idle. It runs ok if I keep it revved, but it is a little shaky at all rpms.
The computer apparently tries to compensate (for what i'm not sure of
yet) by running it way too rich (smells of gas), but that doesn't work. the fault codes report 1) oxygen sensor fault: air/fuel mixture is too rich while driving (duh), and 2) AMM fault: limp-home mode.
today it was up to its old tricks so i tried pulling the signal cable from the AMM, which made no difference. however, i then reconnected it, which corrected the problem (for now)! (i'm happy just to have made some progress...)
my question is then: which part has gone bad: the AMM, the computer, or is it simply bad wiring? I thought it might be the oxygen sensor for a while,
but unplugging it makes no difference in how the car runs. (i suppose
this is a separate problem, but it doesn't prevent me from driving)
thanks for your input,
-joe
