rotor button is part of the distributor cap...it's like a carbon brush with a spring on one end. It transfers the energy from the coil wire to the rotor center.
If you didn't replace the coil wire, you should have. Sounds like you also have a weak spot somewhere if you got zapped...I have magnecore wires and working around the distributor/coil I have yet to be zapped...the power is well insulated from moi!
Another source of ignition cutting out is a poor or leaking/oxidized connection to the distributor at the distributor. Open the connector and clean the terminals and reinstall.
