There's a retaining plate inside the door that the handle hooks into along with the actuator arm - as you twist the handle 90 deg. into place. Not the actuator arm hook - that's what "swings or twists" into place & actuates the lock mechanism, but the two tabs on the body of the handle, a cm. or so from the rubber gasket. Once you've got the actuator arm hooked into where it's supposed to go, position the gasket correctly on the exterior, then while you've got your hand inside the door, manipulating the retaining plate with your fingers, push the door handle "into" the door and line up the ret. plate under those tabs/hooks. When you tighten the door jam screw, it'll draw the handle & plate up tight, (if you miss those tabs the handle'll just pop out). Then just tighten the other screw & you're done. PS: careful of dropping plates, screws, washers because sometimes they're a b-ch to dig out of the door.

Jeez, that was almost exciting.

PS: the ones I've done - I replaced the inside front washers with stainless over rubber washers. That spot's kinda prone to rusting through, once the washers start to go.
