along with the spring in the side cover, there should be a centering spring on the end of the shifting rod. When you take the transfer case off of the tranny, the transfer case should have a pin on it that goes in the middle of the spring. This keeps the tranny in neutral and the stickshift in the center. Otherwise, your stick might stay in neutral, near 1st gear, or neutral near fifth gear. Not in the center.
Older trannies did not have this centering spring. So don't get worried if it's not there! Older cars have the centering mechanism in the shifters in the car. Most people upgrade to the tranny centering spring.
You can replace the cup. You have to remove them to get the differential out.
