Rear defroster "paint-on" repair Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Fri, 23 Feb 2001 09:52:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Ever since I bought my car, the rear defroster hasn't been effective at all. I checked out all electrical connections, relay, switch, etc... found 12v across the back window, but no heat from the elements.
I discovered that every single line across the window had a break of some sort- some physical scratches, some places where it looks like the resistor had corroded or burnt out. On a whim, I went to an auto parts store and paid $6.00 for one of those thimble-sized bottles of paint-on defroster repair. I followed the directions and fixed a 2-inch section of one of the elements.
Now I have one resistor element that works, and the only part of it that is effective is the 2" section I just repaired. The difference is startling- with a half-inch of fluffy snow on the hatch, the 2" repaired section melted a 2"x1" oval right through all of the snow, while the rest of that element barely melted the snow that was touching it, leaving kind of a "groove" in the snow. The rest of the window had no visible effect from the defroster.
So, the question-
Where can I get enough of that paint-on stuff to renew my entire hatchback window? I would have to clean out the entire inventory at the auto-parts store and pay a rediculous amount of money to get the entire grid back to good working condition.
