I bought my first saab a few years ago when I was only 17 for 3750. It was a base model 16 valve 89 2 door, 5 speed. it only had 95,000 miles on it, and I have since put 50,000 miles on the engine (had to transplant the engine/tranny to a new car, my first one got totalled when I got rear-ended). The only major repair work that I've had to do has been a new radiator, CV joint and inner driver. If you are patient, you can find a good Saab in your price range. Make sure that if you get a model year 90-94 it has had the head gasket replaced, or check if it is showing signs of headed south, because these later model engines are prone to head gasket failure. I would advice steering clear of the auto transmission, they are known as being un-reliable, plus the 5-speeds are a blast to drive. Listen for a whine in the transmission in 4th and 5th gear under acceleration, this would be the pinion bearing going bad (this is what kills most Saab 900 manual trannies). Other than that, I would highly reccommend having the car looked over by an independant saab mechanic, the 50 bucks or so is well worth it so you don't have to worry about any surprises down the road.
Good luck, and keep us informed!
Jake
