Although the best adventures may lie elsewhere, do spend some time in Stockholm - it is a city spread over a handful of islands, beautiful. There is an outdoor "museum" called Skansen, sort of a recreation of various homes/ villages from times past staffed by guides in period dress (analagous to Old World Wisconsin, if you've heard of that). *By all means*, you must vist the Vasa museum. It is a 14th or 15th century sunken warship resurrected from the bottom of the cold harbor waters and restored - absolutely remarkable, it blew my mind. Get a subway map for Stockholm - very convienient, you don't need a car.
Do you ski? Inquire up north.
The Scanrail multiday train pass is a money saver for cross country trips. There are some incredibly nice hostels everywhere - don't know if there's an age limit. Buy phone cards in "convienience stores". Write to the US Swedish embassy (honest), they well bury you in great tourist information that reflects what they percieve are the highlights of the culture. Food is great.
More than any other people I've met, the Swedes were truly honored to hear you speak a few pleasantries in their language (from a guide book: please, thank you, I'm sorry, I don't understand Swedish, etc) - really helps. Such kind people. ;o)
P.S. The air can be very dry in winter, drink a lot of water! Dang, I'm jealous.... ;o) Have fun!
