You've got the right idea. Unbolt the resevoir and carefully pull it out. The plastic spouts that the hoses clamp on get brittle. Once you have pulled it back (the hoses have enough slack), remove the return line (upper, i'm pretty sure), and hook it up to a 5 foot section of hose which goes into an oil recycling gerry can on the ground. I use a two inch piece of 1/4 inch pipe nipple to join the two hoses. Then stick a small cork or maybe a big golf tee into the upper resevoir spout so the fluid doesn't spill when you pour new fluid into the resevoir. If you're alone, unplug the connector on the side of the distributor so the engine won't start when you crank it. With a helper you can pump through much faster with the engine running. Keep pouring the new fluid into the resevoir until it comes out pretty clean. 4-6 quarts usually does the trick. While dry running will evenually toast the pump, a second or two won't matter. Also you should clean out the resevoir with brake degreaser after you've flushed the system, and the magnetic trap at the bottom of the resevoir should also be cleaned out.
i do this every spring
