Since third gear teeth are part of the long, one-piece shaft it would cost a fortune to have that entire piece machined to strengthen third gear teeth. I believe it's called the layshaft and has gears 1-4 machined along its length. If it's the gear itself you wanted to widen the teeth on you would still have to widen the teeth on the layshaft. I think he's talking about the fact that the layshaft is only supported at each end with third gear teeth torward the center. I doubt the shaft would flex since it has a very thick cross section. I think the crumbling or stripping of teeth of the gears is because they're too small/thin. I've always speculated it would be cheapest to find a rally gearbox and see what saab did when they designed a box for rallying. From rumours I've heard, there are a few different versions of rally boxes ranging from beefed up to all-out clash boxes. MAYBE some of the rally spec pieces are interchangable with our stock boxes? Those individual pieces would be expensive but probably much less than trying to machine and harden new ones on your own. I haven't looked into it yet since I currently have a hard time finding money for tranny fluid, let alone rally tranny gears!
