another interesting trans "problem"

I was looking the car over more today as I was running power lines for the computer, and pulled the trans dipstick to check the level. The car is an 89 base model. It looks like something is rubbing against both sides of the dipstick, on the edges, wearing away the metal. It looks fresh, but then being imersed in oil all the time, there really isn't any way of knowing for sure. I thought this might have been the source of my trans whine, so I left the dipstick out, and went for a drive. The whine was still there. I can't remember whether it was like this or not when I got the car, but its interesting anyway. I've decided to drive the car till it dies, so even if this is grave, it won't matter. I don't have the place to pull a trans now, and I sure don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. If it dies before I get a house with a garage, I'll just have to start driving the truck again. If not, I'll start looking for a wrecked 900 to swap the trans from. But anyway, I'm more curious about what would cause that rubbing on the dipstick.
