Dealer forgot oil, need advice (Long)

Hello, since I have seen some excellent advice given on general automotive topics, I thought I would pose this to whomever reads this. My friend took his Toyota Avalon (I know Im trying to convert him:) to the dealer for a service/oil change. He drove it home, 3 miles, no idiot lights came up on the dash. Got out, car reeked of burnt rubber and extreme heat coming from engine bay, checked dipstick- bone dry. Called dealer, dealer towed car back. Next day, friend calls dealer, dealer said there was oil in car, he has to pay for tow, and they are not going to fix anything as nothing is wrong.
Now I am afraid dealer is going to attempt to weasel out of owing a new engine or at least a lot of repairs.
So I am asking,
How to look for damage,(warped head, melted gaskets, fried lines etc)
Who to call for an independent, unbiased checking of his car.
Does he need a lawyer?
Any advice or ideas on which direction to head would be greatly appreciated. I really hope Dave, my friend, doesnt get screwed, but maybe this experience will finally convince him SAABs are better :)
