Ahh yes. I suffered the same exact problem and endured the same trauma this weekend too (Saturday afternoon to be exact). Here's to those who took only five minutes to complete this rather annoying task.
Here's what I did - since I could not get the antenna out the top and was afraid I would break the sleeve in such a way I would not ever be able to get the antenna out, I went in through the bottom. First of all, I took whole antenna unit out of the car. I opened the bottom case where the antenna is coiled and verified that the plastic rail thing was broken off (i followed the instructions available on this site). I then pulled the antenna up in to the extended position until the 'rail' was out of the coil and removed all the parts that I could manually remove so I didn't loose them... If my memory serves me correctly, there was the unit the 'rail' coils into, a u shaped protector. Anyway, make sure you do not loose those those things. I then unscrewed the two screws on the verticle part that houses the actual antenna. I carefully slid this out of the base, sliding the the black box attached by the rubber strap down until I could turn it to the side. I then pulled the antenna out the bottom.
To put the new antenna in, I slid it into place through the bottom extending it all the way, and then a carefully twisted the plastic rail into the motor and very carefully lined up the teeth to face the interior of the coil section. I then coaxed the rail along the mechanical teeth and got it going past a few teeth. There was a lot of resistance, so I was careful not to break the rail. I put the housing for the rail and the u shaped protector back on with any other parts on the motor unit and then pushed the rail in further. I found that I had to collapsed the new extended antenna a bit and push another section of the rail in to get manuevering room. I then then care fully manipulated the verticle section that houses the antenna back into place using the manuvering room and replaced the screws. Plugged everything back into test it before actually replacing it to check it. Did not work. Plugged the actual antenna feed in and suddenly the motor sprang to life.
Mounted it back up in the side of the car. Looked great, except the top section of the antenna sticks up about 3/4" to and 1" above the lip of the antenna guide with the power off.
Now who nows how to get it all the way in? It was supposed to go in all the way after turning it on and off a few times....
Hope this helps.
