I was the first person to receive the short shifter produced by John Gagnon. I am very happy with it. I have had it in my '86 SPG for several months now and the shifting is very smooth and precise. John's shifter is made by the second method mentioned by kooch. He may be hard to contact because he is a college student in his senior year. Hopefully soon he will have more time to devote to these shifters. Keep trying.

Here is an e-mail he sent me regarding the shifters. This should answer most of your questions.

Cliff

Fellow SAAB Enthusiast,
This is Johnny G. I am writting this letter to everyone who has inquired to me at one time or another about the tricked-out short-shifters that I make for the "classic" 900. If you are no longer interested in these or if this message does not apply to you for some other reason, then please disreguard this e-mail.
First off, I appologize for disappearing from the scene for a while there, and failing to reply to some of your's e-mails. I got such an overwhelming respnonse that I was simply swamped. I had been trying to work on a way to produce my shifters in much larger quantities, but then with classes and all it was kind of pushed aside, and so I never really got around to it. I apologize.
Anyway, this semester's course load is much easier, and I have a lot more time now, so that I figured I would see if you guys still wanted these. Plus, I have a half-dozen made-up shifters laying around that I just never sold (because I had been planning on trying to mass-produce them). I figure now I will just make them as I aquire the parts for them, and sell them to whoever wants one. But, there will be only a very limited quantity of them.
In case you don't know anything about them, here it goes: they are made from stock shifters and new bushings (with a specially made spacer), and are modified to shorten the throw (very considerably, probably cut in half). All the play and slop is gone, and the shift-feel is very tight and sporty, very solid (but still easily shiftable). The shifter is still the same height as stock (it is not just chopped, the pivot point is actually relocated). The shifter appears identicle as the stock shifter when it is installed. Installation is a snap; anyone with a screwdriver can do it in around 20 minutes (and that would include a coffee brake). All hardware and instructions are included.
The few people who have them have already expressed how much they like them on The Saab Net, so I am sure everyone heard. The shift-feel and quality is at least as good as the much-more-expensive all-metal versions that are available, even though I use stock materials (all metal doesn't exactly make to best bushing, nylon is much better, would you install all metal control arm bushings?). Honestly, my shifters will completely transform the feel of shifting your classic 900, and if you get one I promise you will love it (the few people who have them so far all love them).
I am going to sell them for $150 each, but that will include shipping to anywhere in the U.S. (might be more for elsewhere, but probably not). If you are interested in one, please write me back and we can arrange it. Since I have abandoned any ideas of mass-producing these, they will be on a limited quantity. So for those of you who I do not have enough for, I will put your name on a list and as soon as I can make one up for you I will contact you.
Sorry for the length of this message, but it is a generic message aimed at answering everyone's questions. Thanks for reading this, and happy Saabing!
