andy m- louver install info... Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I was just "catching up" from a long weekend away from computers and noticed your posting a few pages deep on this BB.
My typical procedure for installing the louvers on a hatchback is to clean the glass with a good solvent (goo gone, isopropyl alcohol, or acetone) and the mounting plates as well. I use 3M industrial strength double-sided adhesive tape- it's white foam tape, maybe 1/16" thick. I find it at the local mega-home-improvement-warehouse. Apply it to the mounting plates, then trim the edges to size. Leave the backing "wax paper" stuff on the tape for now.
I start with the top edge (near the roofline) and attach the mounting plates to the louvers. I then work the plates under the rubber window seal and check the louvers for alignment at all four corners of the window. When they're in the right spot, remove the louvers from the mounts without disturbing the position of the mounting plates. Then carefully peel off the backing paper from the adhesive, and press the adhesive onto the glass.
Now you can clip the lower mounting plates into the lower corners of the louvers, remove the backing paper, and press the mounting plates onto the glass.
Once everything is in position, remove the louvers for 2 days or so while the adhesive cures. I frequently press down on the plates during this period. Open the hatch and look at the adhesive through the glass. Make sure there aren't any bubbles between the glass and adhesive. If there are, try to work them out by pressing on the mounting plates.
When you're confident the plates are on for good, mount the louvers. There should be a piece of foam rubber weatherstripping on the top edge between the hinged mounting plates. If this is missing, you'll get rattles. Clear silicon caulk/adhesive will eliminate rattles between the slats.
Good luck!
